The Lufkin-Nacogdoches high school football rivalry was once one of the most intense in the state, but now it's time to move on.
For a long time, there was a need to keep the game going because it was the longest running in Texas. But Hurricane Ike canceled the game in 2008, and now it's time to cancel the series.
The two schools are not even on the same level, as Nacogdoches dropped to 4A several years ago. And as the scoreboard shows they're not even close.
We salute both schools for providing this nearly century long rivalry, but don't feel public support is even there to keep it going.
Both schools have different goals in mind as they compete for different championships. This game only interferes with those goals by forcing the student-athletes to play a type of game they won't have to play again all year.
As equal supporters of both Nacogdoches and Lufkin High Schools, we feel it's time to end the one-sided rivalry.
