CHEROKEE COUNTY (KLTV/KTRE) – A young man is credited for saving his father's life moments before explosions rocked their house.
His father, Rusty Adams, is said to be wheelchair bound and suffers from Parkinson's disease. His 20 year old son, Lance, said he had just stepped outside when he noticed smoke coming from the living room with his father still inside.
"He didn't want to leave. I kept telling him...it was too big. I had to drag him out of the living room through the kitchen and he was fighting the whole way. He thought he could put it out but it was too big," the son said.
Cherokee County firefighters said the call came in shortly after two o'clock Friday afternoon from County Road 4911, that's near Mixon.
Lance said he tried to save some of their belongings but it was a losing battle. "I couldn't get everything I thought I could get before we got out of there. He wouldn't let me go long enough," Lance said.
Lance pulled his father out of the house just moments before the other oxygen tanks in the home began exploding from the fire.
Rusty Adams said he was in his living room when he noticed the air line to his oxygen tank had caught fire. "Pretty much me and Lance. I don't know what we're going to do now."
The wood frame house was destroyed. The fire remains under investigation.
