LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – Forget about shedding the pounds after you stuff your face on Thanksgiving. There's a number of East Texans hitting the gym before turkey day.
"If I stop I know I'm not going to come back but right here before Thanksgiving even though it was real hectic I felt like I had to get that workout in," said Darrell Beard.
Felicia Berry hits the treadmill for her second workout today, burning 1,200 calories.
"I came twice today because I knew the gym was going to be closed tomorrow," said Berry.
Others are working toward personal goals.
"I've lost 40 pounds but I need to lose 40 more. I'm a heart stent patient. I got another chance at life so I thank God for that," said Moses Hall.
Clay Hall is getting in shape for tomorrow's goal, and it's not what you're thinking.
"It's me and my twin brother's tradition. We jog, we do like a big ten mile run on Thanksgiving and Christmas," said Hall.
Climbing these steps is grueling. For Dawn Armstrong, it's a short break.
"We're having thanksgiving at my house. A lot of family… and I've got four young daughters so it's a stress relief."
Livewell Athletic Club employee Michael Bronn isn't surprised to see just a handful of people at the club.
"People are getting ready for thanksgiving. They're cooking, going to the store," said Bronn.
He says with the exception of those trying to get that pre-turkey workout in, the gym stayed fairly empty throughout the day.
"Friday, people usually come in here to try and work off what they ate," said Bronn.
With dedication comes a sweet reward.
"You can eat a little bit of everything, lots of small portions," said Hall.
"Pecan pies and coconut pies," said Beard.
"Ham, potato salad, a little turkey," said Berry.
It's enough reason to make every calorie count.
