Lufkin woman killed when man accidentally hits gas instead of brake

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – A Thanksgiving get-together turned tragic Thursday when a Lufkin woman died after she was struck by a vehicle driven by a Beaumont man.

According to the Lufkin Police report, it happened on the 800 Block of James Street at around 12:33 p.m.

J.W. Samuel, 78, was parking in a residential driveway when he accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake and struck two women who were standing in the driveway behind another parked vehicle.

Iris Simmons Rigsby, 75, was smashed between the two vehicles and suffered injuries that led to her death at a hospital Thursday night.  Another woman was also struck by the vehicle but was knocked to the side and sustained only minor injuries.

Lt. David Young said the car severed both of Rigsby's legs, and medical personnel had a hard time controlling her bleeding on the scene and at the hospital.

"It's really a tragedy," he said. "It was a group of family and friends who were getting together. The man had let his wife out of the car and he was just pulling into the driveway to park the car."

Samuel was not injured and no charges have been filed.  The case is still under investigation.
