Hospital Shooting Victim Speaks

In a story from last week, an inmate escaped from a Marshall hospital after shooting two people. Johnny Kornegay was one of the people shot.

He's a security officer who was working his normal shift at the time. It all started when inmate David Russell was taken to the hospital for a previous injury.

Kornegay says as he looked up, he saw Russell reach for his friend's gun, Harrison County deputy Judy Cadenhead.

In the resulting scuffle, Russell fired the gun, hitting Kornegay in the hand and grazing Judy's leg. Russell then stole a nurse's car and took off, but was later recaptured.

Kornegay says he doesn't consider himself a hero, he claims he was just helping a friend.
