KAVX contest exhibits giving spirit of season

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - Karon Langford rarely enters radio contests, except this time.

"Just had an impulse," she said.

It paid off. She's the grand prize winner for a Christian radio station Christmas gift giveaway.

"And you get yours and then we'll give the rest away to strangers walking down the street," said Jennifer Booker, promotions director for KAVX and KSWP.

Langford's random act of kindness is in line with what one pastor preaches.

"Giving is the greatest gift that God has given and the greatest ability has given us is to give," said Rev. WN Otwell, who was dropping money in the Salvation Army kettle.

An American Red Cross survey finds six in 10 plan to donate this year, and most plan to give $50 or more.

"More people are giving," said Elizabeth Mitchell, a Salvation Army volunteer. "They are nice. They're willing."

But product donations are rapidly growing among businesses and corporations. KAVX uses the promotional items it receives through out the year for today's contest.

The marketing tools serve promoters and provide important branding.

"And it also shows what our station stands for is hope, joy, love," Booker said.

The message directed Langford to her impulsive entry and reinforces her faith in Americans.

"I believe that Americans by nature are generous people and we want to help even when we're maybe suffering ourselves," Langford said.

No matter the incentive, giving brings joy and you can't put a price on that.
