LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – One Angelina County school is starting a new tradition, and a big one at that.
Central Independent School District's first ever band debuted Monday in a Christmas concert at Central Elementary School.
The sixth grade students have only been playing their instruments for three months.
The band director said the superintendent and school board wanted to start a band and the high school math teacher jumped in to be the full-time band director.
The director said band gives the students opportunities they may not have otherwise.
"It gets you new friends to stay out of trouble, and stuff, better grades and you can get a scholarship," said Dominick Lowrey, a band section leader.
"To have a band program start from scratch and for them to play so good after playing only 12 weeks, it makes me so proud of all the work that they have put in and quite frankly it couldn't have happened without the support of the community," said band director David Lambert.
There are 78 students in the band. Lowrey said each year they will add a grade level, so in seven years the district will have an entire junior high and high school band.
Next year they plan to play regularly at junior high basketball games.
