LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - After 39 years of business, Ames Fried Chicken has closed.
The business, located on North Timberland Drive, had its doors locked Wednesday, with a sign thanking the community for its support.
"After 39 years of business we have decided to close our doors," the sign stated. "We thank you for the opportunity to have served you, and for your support through the years."
Owner David Anderson said in a telephone interview Wednesday that the restaurant was just a victim of the economy.
Anderson bought the business from his grandparents three years ago. They had started it in January of 1972.
"It's a very tough decision for me to make," he said. "But my grandmother said, 'It's business, you have to do what you have to do.' We certainly appreciated the community and the support they gave us."
The franchise previously had locations on Frank Street, as well as Jasper, Longview, Nacogdoches and Crockett. The Nacogdoches location was destroyed by a fire in 1980 and Anderson closed the Crockett location in October.
The North Timberland location was the first for Ames, as well as the last to close.
