LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - A Diboll man pleaded guilty Wednesday morning to stealing an eight-foot tall pink fiberglass rabbit last December.

Manuel Lopez-Mendoza, 50, accepted a two-year probated sentence and will pay $500 in restitution. Prosecutors dropped a theft charge against his wife, Lucila Gonzalez Lopez, 50.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, a Diboll Police officer saw the rabbit on the back of a pickup truck. He recognized it from a Diboll business and radioed it in and another officer confirmed it was missing from a snow cone stand off U.S. 59 South.

The couple told officers that someone has sold the rabbit to them. They told KTRE they bought the rabbit from a man for $300 and they wanted to put it in their yard for their grandchildren to play with.
