Proud of East Texas: Peden Syrup Mill

By Joan Hallmark joanhallmark@kltv.com

There's no doubt about our love of sugar, but there was a time when the favorite treat of East Texans was sugar cane syrup. One of Dan Peden's favorite memories is of his dad making sugar cane syrup in the Fall. That's why he's set up his dad's syrup mill in the Van Zandt town of Ben Wheeler, for children and grownups alike to see and maybe evoke some memories of the past.

Syrup making become almost extinct in East Texas as farming dwindled and cane rarely was grown here anymore.

Most area children have never even heard of sugar cane syrup, although they love the sugar product it produces.

Dan Peden's syrup mill is on exhibit in downtown Ben Wheeler across from the fire station.
