LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – They're changing their community as kindergarten students and first graders.

Diboll Primary School students raised 3,335 cans over the past three weeks.  That is six times more than last year.

The school held a campus-wide competition and the three top classes will be rewarded with a party.

"We talked about what it meant and what it was for and I've been here for 15 years and I've never had a class that has brought so much stuff," said Diboll Kindergarten Teacher Jennifer Venavides.

Venavides's class gathered 448 cans.

The food will go to the Diboll Christian Outreach Center.
