More than a Third of Votes Needed for Recall have been Verified

Petitioners hoping to force a recall election for California Governor Gray Davis are more than a third of the way there.

They need more than 980 thousand signatures from registered state voters verified by Wednesday. So far, 390 thousand signatures have been approved.

Many voters are angry over the state's record budget deficit.

Davis supporters want to stop the recall election from being certified. They say some of the people circulating petitions weren't properly registered to vote in California.

An appeals court is set to review the claim filed yesterday.

An election could take place as early as September 30th. Arnold Schwarzenegger is one name being circulated as a possible replacement.
