Grapeland Police Officer enroute to call crashes, totals vehicle

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – Early Sunday morning a Grapeland Police officer headed to a call, takes a curve to fast, and loses control of his vehicle.

Officer Steve Smart was called to assist a Crockett P.D. officer around 3:30 am Sunday morning on a potential D.W.I.

According to Houston County DPS Trooper Brady Germeroth, Smart had his emergency lights on, and was going to quickly when he hit a curve in the Hurricane Bayou area on highway 287.

The vehicle skidded off the road, hit a culvert and rolled over.  Smart was taken to a hospital in Crockett to get checked out.  The Grapeland P.D. vehicle was totaled in the accident according to DPS.

No citations were given since Smart had his lights on and was headed to a law enforcement call.
