LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - Police say they arrested a Lufkin man Saturday after he wrecked during a police chase Saturday on Weiner Street.
Police say they found Joe Donald Terry Jr., 48, to be in possession of cocaine upon his arrest. He is charged with evading arrest, possession of a controlled substance and two outstanding traffic warrants from 2001.
According to the police report, Terry was driving a 2000 Chevy Malibu on Wilson Avenue when he saw an officer and sped away, driving up to 59 miles-per-hour in a 30 mph zone.
The officer pursued Terry, who ignored a stop sign at the intersection of Wilson Avenue and Keltys Street, according to the report. When the officer reached the 1400 block of Wilson Avenue, a citizen standing at the roadside pointed toward Barto Drive, signaling where Terry had turned, according to the report.
Terry's escape ended when he crashed into a curb at the intersection of South Raguet Street an Weiner Street, hard enough to force the airbags to deploy. Terry was not injured.
The officer said Terry told the officer he fled from him because he wanted to buy cocaine, he is on parole, had an expired driver's license and outstanding traffic warrants.
Police spokesman Det. J.B. Smith said Terry would not have been arrested were it not for his paranoia.
"The officer was just patrolling the area and Mr. Terry drove by him, looked real hard at him and sped off," Smith said. "The officer was not even checking on him."
At the time of his arrest, Terry was found to be in possession of cocaine, according to the report.
