LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – A Lufkin couple narrowly escaped a fire that raged through their house on Dale Street early Thursday morning.

Only charred remnants of the home are left.  Along with the house and everything inside, three vehicles in the yard were destroyed.

Fire investigator Steve McCool said the man who lived there told him he awoke to the screams of his female partner.  He said she was yelling "The house is on fire!"

He said he tried to leave through the front door, however, fire had filled the living room.  He managed to escape out a back door and said he thought she followed him when he realized she was still inside.  He broke out a back window and then broke out a second window before he located the distraught woman.  He managed to pull her through the window to safety.  She was taken to a local hospital with what are believed to be serious injuries.

McCool said they are working to determine what caused the house to go up in flames and ask if anyone has any information that might be helpful to their investigation to call the Lufkin Fire Department.

McCool said the couple had lived in the house for five years.  Their names have not been released.
