NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - A Nacogdoches author's writing is making its way to the big screen with filming to take place in Nacogdoches.

Shooting for Joe Lansdale's holiday horror, "Christmas with the Dead," will begin in June.

It's a joint project of Stephen F. Austin State University's film department and Lansdale's instruction. The accomplished author teaches part time at SFA. "I teach screen play writing or creative writing. In January, I'm teaching writing horror fiction and some of the students in my class were also film students," explained Lansdale. " We just got to talking here and there and I think it just kind of grew out of that."

Brian James Fitzpatrick will direct the film and Damian Maffei will star in it, according to " I'm bringing in the director who is some what new, but I think he's going to be prominent and Damian is a very good actor," said Lansdale.

Lansdale's first film, "Bubba Ho-Tep" was released in 2003 and has developed a cult following. Another film was distributed to Showtime. " I have options on lots of my work, but you never know if it will actually be filmed," explained Lansdale.

"Christmas" is about a man who decides to decorate his home for the holidays, despite the threat of zombies, according to dreadcentral.

Lansdale has authored more than 30 books. He also is a teacher of martial arts, holding several belts in various types.
