SABINE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

SABINE COUNTY, Texas (KTRE) - A Sabine County woman died Christmas night in a trailer house fire south of Pineland.

Chief Deputy George Griffith said firefighters were called to the fire on the 500 block of East Bradshaw Drive around 9 p.m. Saturday night. The live-in boyfriend of Melba Medley, 70, was able to get out of the house, but Medley was overtaken by the smoke and could not get out.

"I believe they were both in motorized carts," Griffith said. "She was in a back bedroom and had to go further to get out."

Griffith said the boyfriend called authorities from a neighbor's house.

"They couldn't get there in time," Griffith said. "It was a trailer house, and those burn up pretty quick."

Griffith said a cause of the fire has not been determined, but does appear to be accidental.
