Lufkin woman killed, 3 injured in crash near Waco

FALLS Co. (Lufkin note) – A Lufkin woman was killed and three others injured in a collision involving a semi-trailer in Falls County, near Waco early Wednesday morning.

The accident happened at the intersection of U.S. Highway 77 and Farm-to-Market Road 935, just south of Chilton, according to Sr. Corporal Charlie J. Morgan, DPS Highway Safety Education and Public Information Officer.

Phillis Riley, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene.  She had been a passenger in a 2000 Chevrolet Impala driven by Daniel Sosa, 20, both of Lufkin.  A DPS report indicated Riley was ejected from the car when the crash occurred.  An autopsy has been ordered.

Sosa suffered a broken collar bone and is listed in stable condition at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco.  Another passenger, April Windham, 19, also of Lufkin was treated at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center and released.

The driver of the 2000 Freightliner truck trailer, Charles Nemons, 46, of Waco was also taken to Hillcrest where he's being treated for lacerations to the face and minor cuts.  He's listed in stable condition.

The accident happened about 1:14 Wednesday morning.  Investigators said Sosa failed to yield the right of way while driving east on FM 935 and his car collided with Nemons' truck which was traveling northbound towards Waco with a truckload of turkeys .  No citations were issued at the time of the accident.  Investigators noted that weather conditions were wet and rainy.
