NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, Texas (KTRE) - Timely and alert work by an off-duty Nacogdoches County deputy led to the arrest of a Nacogdoches man caught stealing gas cans from a woman's residence, according to Sheriff Thomas Kerss.

Kevin Edward Cook, 34, is charged with burglary of a building, a state jail felony.

Kerss said a woman living on State Highway 21 West, between Douglass and Nacogdoches, noticed Cook go into a storage building behind her house at 6:43 a.m. Sunday and take two gas cans before heading back to his vehicle, parked just off the highway in front of her house.

At the same time, Deputy Ben Curtis was on his way home from work when he saw the vehicle and pulled over, to see if Cook needed roadside assistance.

Kerss said the woman had picked up the phone to call 911 when she saw Curtis, so she went outside and told him that Cook had just stolen the gas cans he was holding.

Curtis arrested Cook on the burglary charge.
