CENTER, Texas (Press release) - Sheriff Newton Johnson reports that on Wednesday, January 5, 2011, two bank robbery suspects were arrested in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. About noon today the suspects robbed the Peoples State Bank in Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, which is south of Mansfield just off of I-49. DeSoto Parish deputies received information about the two suspects and where they were located. Law Enforcement officers then spotted the two men in the suspect vehicle in Mansfield, Louisiana. As Law Enforcement Officers approached the vehicle the two men abandoned the car and ran into a wooded area.
Sheriff Johnson stated that after a brief chase both men were taken into custody at approximately 1:15 pm. At the time the men were arrested a gun and cash were found. Both men were transported to the DeSoto Parish jail in Mansfield where they are charged with several bank robberies, including the two Texas State Bank robberies in Joaquin. Both suspects have given statements admitting that they robbed the two banks in Joaquin and several other banks.
Sheriff Johnson says that the two suspects are identified as Dwayne Hooks, B/M, 32 YOA, and Kevin Brown, B/M, 31 YOA. The Shelby County Sheriff's Department has issued four 1st Degree Felony arrest warrants charging these two suspects with Aggravated Robbery. No bond has been set at this time and the FBI is questioning both subjects.
Both suspects have criminal records with various arrest for burglary, robbery, car-jacking, drug possession, battery, aggravated burglary, sex crimes and forgery.
Sheriff Johnson will send booking photo's of both suspects as soon as we get them from DeSoto Parish.
Sheriff Johnson would like to thank all the agencies who assisted with this investigation and eventual capture of the two robbery suspects, which includes the Texas Rangers, FBI, Desoto Parish Sheriff's Dept., Sabine Parish Sheriff's Dept, Caddo Parish Sheriff's Dept and the Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers.
Sheriff Johnson also would like to thank the employees of Texas State Bank and Farmers Bank in Joaquin for their assistance and cooperation during this investigation along with the many citizens who assisted us.
Sheriff Johnson would like to also give special thanks to DeSoto Parish Sheriff Dept. Lt. Toni Morris who spotted the suspects and began the initial pursuit of the suspect vehicle leading to their arrest. Also a special thanks to Texas Rangers Lt. Kevin Pullen and Sgt. Tom Davis for the many hours of dedicated work toward the capture of these suspects.
