LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - By Jeff Awtrey - email
LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - Lufkin Police have arrested a convicted sex offender who they say not only moved without registering a new address, but falsified documentation stating he had registered that address.
Dante McRay Smith, 26, of Lufkin, is charged with tampering with a governmental document and failure to comply with duties of sex offender registration. He was also booked in the Angelina County Jail on four municipal court warrants.
According to the police report, an officer assigned to monitor Smith discovered he had moved from his address on the 500 block of Homer Street, shortly after he had contacted him there on Nov. 7.
The officer found that Smith had moved to 312 Mantooth Ave., but he had not notified the Lufkin Police Department prior to moving and he had not registered the new address with the LPD. The officer then obtained a warrant for the arrest, on the failure to comply charge.
Officers responded to the office of Angelina County Adult Probation at 9 a.m.Tuesday, after being notified by Smith's probation officer that he was there.
The probation officer then told police Smith had presented to her a fraudulent sex offender registration receipt as proof that he had met that date with Lufkin Police Department Records Section personnel and notified them that his residential address changed, according to the report.
Smith had altered an old sex offender registration receipt issued to indicate that he had changed his address to 1014 East Denman Avenue Apt. 14 in Lufkin. The probation officer knew the document had been altered because the changes were made by scribbling with an ink pen over the information on the type-written document, according to the report.
The investigating officer has not yet verified Smith's current residential address. He had told his probation officer that he is living at 312 Mantooth Avenue in Lufkin but stated to the officer, and falsified the registration receipt to indicate, that he is living at 1014 East Denman Avenue Apt. 14.
Lufkin Police spokesman Det. J.B. Smith said the officer will continue to monitor Smith and, if he is released from jail, will verify his residential address and update Lufkin Police Department Sex Offender records.
Det. Smith said police have had problems with this sex offender before, and the officer indicated on the report that Smith does not like to comply with the requirements he is ordered to follow.
"Registration laws are there so the public will know that he's living there," Det. Smith said. "They have an interest in knowing, so the laws allow us to publicize where he lives."
Smith was convicted in 2004 on a charge of sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl.
