LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – He's been with Lufkin's parks and recreation department for 30 years, but now he has a new title.
Mike Akridge has been named the new parks and recreation director for the city. Friday was his first day on the job.
City officials told him Wednesday he had been chosen out of about 40 applicants.
In his old position, he was responsible for promoting recreation, sports, and special events in the city.
"I just wanted to see more of the administrative end, a better challenge to see what, I mean, I've done sports and there's always some challenges, there's always new challenges in anything you do, but this will be just a different angle, that's still there, but kind of to see more of how the administrative end works with parks and recreation," said Akridge.
Akridge said he plans to re-do some pavilions and upgrade the ballparks.
He also said the city has a long-range, 10-year plan to establish some type of recreation center in Lufkin.
He's taking the place of Don Hannabas who retired about a year ago.
