Lee Godsey was assigned to teach landing craft operations in World War two until he asked "to go where the action was." Godsey got his wish in a big way when he was assigned to the U.S.S. Bruele which took part in the invasions of both Iwo Jima and Okinawa in 1945.

Godsey's job in the invasions was to carry troops and supplies in his LCVP, Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel, to beaches in the midst of battle. The Bruele was full of troops and on its way to the invasion of Japan when World War Two ended.
