The Legislative session is upon us, and this year, the pressure is greater than ever. But no excuses are allowed.
The state house has a Republican supermajority. That means members of the GOP only have to show up for a bill to pass. And there is plenty of work to be done.
The state budget faces a shortfall as high as $25 billion. With that kind of uphill battle, our lawmakers better get to work.
We realize there will be some cuts that have to be made, and some are going to hurt. All we ask is for legislators to unite and do what needs to be done.
In the past, opposing parties could take measures to ensure some bills don't pass. But today, with a united front, Republicans should do what they say needs to be done.
But be careful. This Legislature will be held accountable. If something goes wrong following this session, the only fingers these lawmakers can point are at themselves.
In East Texas, we want our schools to be well-funded, our water protected and more jobs.
We'll see how those issues fare in a few months.
