Authorities release names of shooting in Pollok shooting incident

POLLOK, TX (KTRE) - POLLOK, Texas (KTRE) - Two people were injured Monday night when a man tried to wrestle a gun away from a woman who was apparently trying to shoot herself at a residence in the Pollok area, according to the Angelina County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Kent Henson said Lauren Michelle Holcombe, 25, of Lufkin, and Cody Whitworth, 25, were talking in a parked truck. sometime after 11 p.m. outside a residence, on FM 843, which is off U.S. 69 North. Holcombe then pulled out a pistol from the console in an attempt to shoot herself. Whitworth tried to stop her and suffered gunshot wounds in the hand, chest and back. Holcombe suffered a gunshot wound to the neck.

At this point, Henson said there is little indication of what may have lead to the shooting. "A couple that lives in the house with the gentleman said [the victims] walked outside and they were laughing and talking when they walked out. There were no problems or anything. They were just friends."

Investigators said Whitworth usually carried the 9 mm Glock handgun in his truck and kept it in the console.

Both victims were taken to Memorial Health System of East Texas in Lufkin. Lt. Pete Cooper said Holcombe was transferred to a Tyler hospital and as of 2 p.m. Tuesday, Whitworth was still at Memorial hospital, where he is expected to make a full recovery.
