LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – In a surprise move Monday evening, the Wells City Council voted to fire their one and only police officer: Chief Jeff Clopp.

During what was supposed to be a budget workshop for the financially struggling city, the city council meeting turned into a firing squad by two members.

Against the wishes of Mayor Pro Tem Robert Kalka and Councilman Rex Aycock, Councilwoman Dorothy McMillion motioned to terminate the police chief because of exceeding his part-time hours and policy issues.

Kalka felt there were other ways the budget could be cut, but Councilwoman Billy Petty seconded the motion.

With a final vote of three against two, Clopp was fired.

"I'm just shocked. I really am because it's the citizens that are going to suffer," said Kalka.

"Well, his hours have been exceeding so much more than we allowed him," said McMillion.

Kalka says he worries about the time it takes for county law enforcement to respond to emergencies.

A meeting to really go line-by-line through the budget is scheduled for next Monday.  The council plans to see where the city can cut expenses.
