LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - Lufkin Police arrested a man who they say stole an all-terrain vehicle, then jumped off it while driving it when he saw officers.

Miguel Yanez, 17, is charged with theft, a state-jail felony.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, two officers responded to the 1800 block of Ford Chapel Road on Sunday in reference to suspicious activity. They saw Yanez near the pond at the VFW who was riding an ATV, according to the report.

Officers yelled for Yanez to "come here," but instead, he jumped from the moving ATV and fled into the woods. One of the officers had to jump on the ATV to make it stop.

There were two other ATVs in the area which were reported stolen and officers began searching for Yanez, with the help of officers from other agencies. One officer found a cell phone, which they were able to connect to Yanez.

Constable Tom Selman took Yanez into custody in the 2000 block of Lincoln Street. When officers arrived, they released him from their custody and asked why he ran from them. According to the affidavit, Yanez told them he was "young, stupid and scared."

Officers told Yanez that if he truly wanted to make the incident right, he would return all the items reported stolen from car burglaries that morning.

For now, Yanez is only charged with one count of theft. He was booked into the Angelina County Jail on Monday.
