Firefighter arrested for starting a fire

Released by The Longview Fire Department:

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV/KTRE) - On Tuesday, January 25, 2011, Longview Fire Department employee Cody Sanders was arrested by the Gregg County Sheriff's Office following investigation into a vehicle fire.

On January 10, the Longview Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire in the 1200 block of Independence Drive. The Longview Fire Department extinguished the blaze, and fire damage was limited to a 2008 Ford F-150. Initial investigation suggested the fire to be "suspicious." Upon determining the owner of the vehicle to be Longview Fire Driver Cody Sanders, the Longview Fire Marshal's office requested that the investigation be turned over to the Gregg County Fire Marshal.

According to Longview Fire Marshal Johnny Zackary, "This is a sad day for the Longview Fire Department. Thankfully, there were no injuries, and no damage other than the single vehicle. Based on the information available at this time, we do believe this is an isolated incident."

Cody Sanders was hired as a firefighter paramedic with the Longview Fire Department in 2003. He promoted to Fire Driver in 2008. Based on the Gregg County Fire Marshal's investigation, the Longview Fire Department has recommended termination of the employee.
