LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - Lufkin Police have arrested a Corrigan man who they say spliced cable wires for other people so they could get free cable service.

Ulices Zavala, 32, is charged with criminal mischief, a state-jail felony.

According to the police report, officers responded to Newsom Apartments, located at 622 Newsom St., in December after a Suddenlink worker discovered several illegal taps in their cable that had been tied into several apartments. Suddenlink Communications had experienced interruption in their phone service and sent someone to check on the problem.

The worker said he the suspect used the same equipment to create the taps that had been used at an earlier date at Zavala's house, which the worker had removed.

Police interviewed a woman whose apartment one of the wires was connected to. The woman said she saw a man fitting Zavala's description that she caught him behind her apartment. She said Zavala offered to give her cable for a one time fee of $50 and she agreed to pay him.

The woman was able to identify Zavala in a photo lineup and the investigating officer obtained a warrant for his arrest. Tuesday, an off-duty officer recognized Zavala at Wal-Mart and arrested him.
