SFA dorm evacuated due to small fire in dorm room

BEAUMONT, TX (News Release) - NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - A dorm on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University had to be evacuated about 2 o'clock Friday morning after a fire in one of the rooms.

SFA officials describe the fire as a "small fire that occurred after a lamp fell and caught bedding on fire."  The fire occurred in a resident hall room on the second floor of the dorm.

The student noticed the fire and summoned her floor supervisor for help.  They successfully put the fire out with an extinguisher, however, the smoke from the fire set the second floor sprinkler system off abruptly awakening sleeping students.

Steen Hall was evacuated and 300 students were taken to the East College cafeteria.  The dorm had mostly smoke and water damage.

Nacogdoches firefighters responded to the scene.

As of 11 a.m. students had returned to the building.

No injuries were reported at this time.

Fire investigators are investigating.  We'll have updates as new information becomes available here at KTRE.com and on KTRE's East Texas News.
