2 major overpasses closed in Lufkin

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - City officials have closed the U.S. 59 North and South overpasses at Loop 287 in Lufkin, due to ice buildup.

While those are the only two overpasses that are closed, ice is present on many area roads, particularly bridges and overpasses, according to city officials.

Since 3 p.m. Thursday, Lufkin Police officers have responded to nine vehicle crashes and numerous calls for assistance on the road. No injuries have been reported. Most are blamed on unsafe speeds for the inclement weather.

Lufkin Police urge motorists to drive slowly, keep a safe following distance, watch well ahead of the vehicle, avoid sudden stops and maneuvers and allow extra time to reach destinations.
