The City of Lufkin and Angelina County have agreed on a new contract for animal control. The county used to pay the city $35,000 a year for those services. The new contract will operate on a "per animal" basis.
Residents in the county can take dogs or cats to the city's animal shelter and surrender them at a cost of $15.00 per animal. But the city will not respond to, or be responsible for, animal control calls outside the city limits. So who would be responsible for stray pets outside the city limits?
"Well, right now whoever the property owner is will have to make a decision on what they want to do with it. Right now all we can provide is a place that they can carry it to. And they'd have to pay for it," said Angelina County Judge Joe Berry.
