COPY-2-yr-old child accidentally shoots self at Cherokee Co. home

Release by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department:

CHEROKEE COUNTY - A two year old child shot himself with a gun at his Cherokee County home, Saturday night.

According to Cherokee County Sheriff's Department, just after 9:30 pm, Saturday, Rusk Police Department and Cherokee County Sheriff's Department responded to a 911 call that a 2-year-old child had shot himself at his home on County Road 1201.

While the mother of the victim was in the living room, the child located the gun on a dividing wall between the living area and the kitchen and used a stool to retrieve the gun case.

According to authorities, once the child had the case it appeared he sat on the stool and opened the case to remove the small caliber semi automatic gun that had a round chambered and fully loaded magazine.

The child then shot himself one time in the upper right chest, just below the collarbone.

The child was transported by ambulance to ETMC Rusk, and then transported by medical helicopter to Dallas Children's Hospital.

At this time the child is in critical condition, recovering from surgery at Dallas Children's Hospital.

The case remains under investigation by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.
