LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - After 40 years of dealing cars in surrounding areas of Angelina County, the Perry dealership name is expanding to Lufkin.

Rex Perry, owner of Rex Perry Autoplex of Nacogdoches, confirmed Monday that he and a Houston-area businessman have bought out the Barrett Brothers Kia dealership, located at 1705 S. First St.

"I always wanted to be in Angelina County," Perry said. "After talking to Jim Barrett, I learned about the opportunity. I've been watching the popularity of the Kia product, with fuel getting more expensive, and the Kia is a safer car."

The Perry name is well-known in East Texas. Rex' father, Mike Perry, began the dealership now located on South Street. Rex's brother, Ray, now runs that dealership. Another brother, Hunter Perry, owns Mike Perry Chevrolet in San Augustine.

"I'm looking so forward to it," Perry said. "I love Angelina County, other than the Panthers beating up on the Dragons every year. This gives me a chance to expand, and it's already been a good market for us. I just couldn't pass on it."

"I'm going to get a hard time about this," Perry said. "You know my last name is Perry. The partner's name is Ellis. His name is Shad Ellis and he's been a friend for quite some time, so the name of the dealership is going to be Perry Ellis Kia."

Just two years ago, Wright Motor Company bought out Barrett Brother's Pontiac, Buick, GMC, but they held onto their Kia dealership next door, until now.

After bottoming out two years ago, perry says the East Texas car market is looking up.

"I wouldn't say that it's all over with, but you can certainly see, it reminds me of the car business, you know, five or six, seven years ago as opposed to where it was a couple years ago," Perry said.

He plans to keep up the barrett's business reputation, but there will be some changes.

"I'm ready to bring about 30, 40, 50 good, clean, used cars over here and get that into the business," Perry said.

A business that for him, is all in the family.

"I wish that I could tell you I was some kind of really great car dealer person, but the truth of the matter is, it's because of my parents," he said. "They're the ones that started all, passed it along to my brothers and I and if it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be able to do this."
