FRISCO, Texas – East Texas natives Mary Dickerson and Nick McCloud have been named Southland Conference Athletes of the Week announced league officials Monday afternoon. It marks the first time during the 2011 indoor season that SFA has received the honor.
A hurdle and jumps specialist from Tyler, McCloud recorded second-place finishes in the 60-meter hurdles and the 200 meter dash at the Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla. Despite his second-place finish, he was the top collegiate finisher in the 60-meter hurdles clocking a time of 7.73 seconds in the event missing a NCAA automatic qualifying time by three-hundredths of a second. McCloud's time is the sixth fastest in the nation. He later returned to the track and clocked a time of 22.05 in the 200 meters.
A native of Groveton, Texas, Dickerson recorded two individual titles over the weekend winning the 200 and 400-meter races. She also ran the anchor leg of the Ladyjacks' 1,600-meter relay to help SFA record a second-place finish in the event. Dickerson clocked a time of 25.01 to win the 200 meters, and a 55.99 to win the 400. Both marks are currently tops in the Southland Conference.
The SFA men and women return to action Friday when they open the first day of competition at the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. The meet will take place on the Oklahoma campus.
