Dog attacks elderly man, Nacogdoches Police officer

BEAUMONT, TX (News Release) - NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - An elderly man was injured Monday afternoon when a dog bit him on the leg. When a Nacogdoches Police officer responded to the scene, the dog also attacked him and the officer fired his gun at it.

According to the report, officers responded to the 400 block of Sandra Jean Street at 2:19 p.m. and saw an elderly man lying in the street with a dog bite to the leg.

The dog then attacked one of the officers, biting his boot. The officer fired his gun at the dog, but missed and the dog ran away.

Officers and neighborhood residents began looking for the dog, but it returned home. Animal control officers took custody of the dog.

The elderly man was taken to a Nacogdoches hospital by ambulance to be treated for the injury.

Animal control supervisor Jamie Shelton said the dog, which is a blue heeler mix, is being held in quarantine for 10 days, in accordance with state law.

"We can declare the animal dangerous, but first we are investigating the matter," Shelton said. "That can take anywhere from 10 to 30 days."

Shelton said the dog's owners have been cooperative with the investigation.
