LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - A copper thief has apparently hit a newly constructed home in Lufkin.

According to the Lufkin Police report, about $5,000 in wire and damage is reported at the house on the 800 block of Tom Temple Drive.

Lt. David Young said the wiring was in the walls, which had already been sheetrocked and the thief tore into the sheetrock to get the wiring.

Young said reports of copper theft at constructed homes has been rare.

"You don't see a lot of it right now," Young said. "But copper prices are back up so we may start seeing more of it again."

Young said the house had not been hooked up for electricity yet.

"Really the only danger they had was in getting caught," he said. "But stealing any amount of copper is a felony."
