LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – It's the first of its kind on all of Lake Sam Rayburn: fisherman with disabilities will have a better opportunity on the lake.
Construction on an accessible fishing pier is underway at Cassels-Boykin County Park.
During the planning stages of the park, boat ramps and a pavilion were to be built. The third stage included a fishing pier designed with people with disabilities in mind.
The best news: a U.S. Housing and Development Community Block Grant will fund most of the pier's construction.
"It will have some sort of railing around it and at different heights that will allow you to nose up to it with a wheelchair and fish right off the side," said Jason Kartye, Angelina Co. Parks Director.
Construction is planned to start this summer. Kartye says it will take a few months to complete. Then, everyone, no matter how mobile will have a place to fish on Lake Sam Rayburn.
