NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) – A young Nacogdoches County Sheriff's deputy and jailer was killed in an accident early Sunday.  Sheriff Thomas Kerss is calling this a tragedy.

According to Kerss, Morgan Sheppard,26, was riding a motorcycle and was hit when a car pulled into his path at the 2800 block of North Street.  Nacogdoches PD is currently investigating the accident, and says the call came in at 1:22 a.m. They do not want to release any details at this time.

Kerss says Sheppard became a deputy just a few months ago, only recently graduating from the Stephen F. Austin State University Police Academy.

"He was a promising young man.  Had been wanting to be a police officer for a long time... This is one of those tragedies where a life is taken early in life."

In a Facebook message, Kerss asks for the community to join them "in uplifting Morgan's family and co-workers in prayers."
