NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A renewing of one of the oldest rivalries in the state of Texas will take place Saturday when the Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team will host Sam Houston State Saturday at Fletcher Garner Track. Field events are slated to begin at 2 p.m. with the men's and women's hammer throw. Track events are scheduled for a 5:45 p.m. start with the women's 400-meter relay.
SFA and Sam Houston State have been two of the stronger teams in the Southland Conference over the course of the past decade, which has only strengthened the rivalry. The two schools have combined to win 16 conference indoor and outdoor titles since 2001.
The SFA men and women enter the 2011 outdoor season among the league favorites for the conference title. The Ladyjacks have won back-to-back conference outdoor titles, and five consecutive league championships, including the 2011 indoor conference crown last month.
Saturday's meet will serve as the 2011 outdoor season opener for both schools.
