SFA Sweeps Sam Houston State

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team recorded a strong start to the 2011 outdoor season by sweeping Sam Houston State in SFA-SHSU Dual meet Saturday evening at Fletcher Garner Track. The Lumberjacks defeated their guests from Huntsville, 103-83, while the Ladyjacks scored 108 points to record a 32-point victory over SHSU.
Senior thrower Adam Wolfe recorded the biggest of highlight of the day for an SFA team that combined for 23 individual titles and four relay wins. Wolfe recorded a throw of 216-4.00 to win the men's javelin throw and break a seven-year old record. Wolfe's throw broke the old record by more than five feet.
Several other Lumberjacks added individual titles for SFA. Jamal Peden won the long jump with a time of 23-5.25, while senior Josh Cruse added a victory in the triple jump (47-11.00). Colton Ross led an SFA sweep of the pole vault. He cleared a height of 15-9.00 to win the event, while junior Macy Wade won the women's pole vault (11-9.75).
Junior Jon Arthur and freshman Clint Harris added to the 'Jacks' title haul in the throwing events. Arthur recorded a toss of 58-6.00 to win the shot put, while Harris took the men's discus (161-10).
Junior Xavier Rodriguez got the SFA men out to a great start on the track recording a victory in the men's 1,500 meters. Rodriguez crossed the line with a time of 4:01.89 to win the event. Freshman Lauren Smith followed suit in the women's 1,500 meters, taking the victory with a time of 4:42.46.
Freshman Cass Brown and senior Ty Thomas led Lumberjack sprinters. Brown won the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 47.15, while Thomas added a victory in the 100 meters (10.62). The SFA men also won the 400-meter relay (40.87) and the 1,600-Meter relay (3:11.00). Freshman Nathan Collier closed out the individual titles for the men with his time of 8:46.57 to take the 3,000-meter run.
The Ladyjacks were led by freshman Chelsea Stephen who recorded two individual titles Saturday. Stephen won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.98. She returned to the track to take the 400-meter hurdles clocking a time of 1:04.98.
Junior Mary Dickerson won the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 24.87, and then returned to the track to rally the women' 4X400-meter relay team to a victory with a time of 3:45.57. The Ladyjacks' 400-meter relay team also posted a win clocking a time of 46.17.
The Ladyjacks were strong in the jumps taking all three events. Senior Camelia Sams won the long jump recording a mark of 19-0.75. Sophomore Crystal Walker won the triple jump by posting a mark of 39-7.00. Junior Carrie Hahn won the women's high jump when she cleared a height of 5-5.00.
The throws events saw two victories for the SFA women. After sitting out the indoor season, senior Kaitlyn Andrews stepped in the throwing circle to record a victory in the shot put with her toss of 50-11.00. Junior Megan Harlan added a throw of 130-10 to win the javelin.
Freshman Paige McCutcheon gave SFA a victory in the 400-meter dash when she clocked a time of 56.33 to win the event. Junior Danielle Burchett followed with a time in the 800 meters (2:18.39). Senior Marie Flores tacked on a victory in the women's 3,000 meters with her time of 10:01.97.
The SFA men and women return to action Friday when they travel to Houston, Texas to compete in the Rice Bayou Classic.
