LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – State District Judge Barry Bryan Tuesday ordered a man charged with aggravated robbery and a felon in possession of a fire arm of the Rent 1st store in Lufkin to a maximum facility state hospital, instead of jail.
The order followed a competency hearing which found William Colquitt incompetent to stand trial. Judge Bryan said Colquitt will be evaluated to see if he can be restored to full competency.
Colquitt was arrested last July after the manager of Rent 1st identified him as the man who made him and his employees take off their clothes before he robbed them at gunpoint.
Robert Nobles, Rent 1st manager, maintained his composure despite the frightening reality of the robbery. He was able to call 9-1-1 and alert police shortly after the robbery. In addition he gave police a detailed description of the suspect.
Hours after the robbery, police found William Colquitt, and the manager's stolen car near Motel Six, just blocks away. Police also found a 40-caliber gun on the suspect.
