Proud of East Texas: David Adickes

By Joan Hallmark

Sam Houston, Charlie Wilson, and 43 Presidents of the United States, have all been subjects for David Adickes' art.

Although Adickes is well known as a painter and at the age of 80 still paints over a hundred canvases a year, he is best known to the general public for his sculptures. His 67 foot tall sculpture of Sam Houston on I-45 near Huntsville is the largest sculpture of its kind in existence. Addicks is also known for his 43 18-foot-high sculptures of our presidents in the Presidential Garden in South Dakota and a similar garden in Virginia. His life size sculpture of Charlie Wilson in Lufkin's Veteran's Center and the 37 foot high Beatles Sculpture in Shreveport have only added to Adickes' fame

Adickes' paintings displayed at the Gold Leaf Gallery through April 2nd, show the influence of his art training in France. "Contemporary Figurative" best describes his painted subjects, while his sculptures are "Realistic Monumental".

The Gold Leaf Gallery is located at 4518 South Broadway in Tyler's French Quarter Shopping Center.
