EAST TEXAS (KTRE) -

(KTRE) – It's the beginning of snake season.

With daytime temperatures beginning to rise into the 80ies, area residents are being cautioned to begin looking out for venomous snakes waking up from their winter slumber.  Add to the end of their hibernation, the fact that it has been extremely dry in East Texas and it is the start of snake mating season, you are likely to find plenty of the slithering creatures.

Parks & Wildlife officials warn this time of year, snakes are going to be out in the roads, pathways, looking for a place to warm themselves.

And, as homeowners turn to gardening and taking care of their lawn, you should watch where you put your hands and feet. "Keep the trash and leaf litter, and things like that cleaned up around your yard and you'll greatly reduce the number of snakes that you have," Sean Willis, Texas Parks and Wildlife biologist said.

As summer approaches, the behavior of snakes will change, they will look for direct sunlight during the early morning hours, but then they will seek shade.

"Really the best thing that you can do whenever you do see a snake is to just leave it alone," said Brian Henley, a consultant herpetologist at Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin. "There's an astronomically high percentage, I think it's about 90 percent of the people that are bitten by snakes are doing one of two things, they're either trying to catch or kill the snake."

Texas is home to 15 venomous snakes are found throughout the state, at least five are prevalent to East Texas.  To learn more about the snakes most likely to show up in and around East Texas click here.

Cedar granules are said to be an effective, safe snake repellent.  Moth balls are also used, however, they are said to be toxic to domestic animals.  There are several over-the-counter sprays available to help ward off the pests.  Cinnamon oil, cat litter, sulphur and cats have also been used to help keep the slithering creatures away.
