LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – Supporters of the Crockett State School refuse to stand idly by as the Texas Youth Commission threatens to close three state facilities.

"We need to overwhelm them with a crowd," said Houston Co. Judge Lonnie Hunt.

TYC executives are not taking the decision lightly. Public hearings are being held in each of the communities where the facilities are located.  They're coming to Crockett on April 9th.

Houston County Judge Lonnie Hunt wants to make the decision easy.

"If they have to make a decision to close some of these TYC facilities this is absolutely the last one they should close," said Hunt.

The Crockett State School is one of the largest employers in the area. If it's closed, hundreds would lose their jobs.

"We have no other jobs for those people to go to. They would have to move. It would negatively affect every business in our community," said Hunt.

These tall fences that run along the exterior of Crockett State School can be intimidating. What's happening on the other side could change the lives of these kids.

136 youth inmates are housed here. The staff works to create a new future, after a troubled past.

"Quite a few are in for murder, aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, manslaughter, a lot of those kids are sentenced to TYC," said Superintendent Donald Brooks, Crockett State School.

Brooks is thrilled with the outpouring of support... hoping the TYC sees it too.

"To tell them we have a community - not just the city of Crockett - but this whole East Texas that supports us," said Brooks.

Staff at the school commute from all over the area, including about 15 from Lufkin.  A public hearing is being held on April 9th and 10 a-am at Crockett High School.
