First place against second place. A perfect combination for an afternoon baseball matinee.
Sure, it's still weeks away from the post season, but Wednesday's doubleheader between the 189th-ranked Angelina College Roadrunners and the Texarkana Bulldogs – currently holding onto first place in Region XIV's East Zone – promises plenty in the way of a playoff-type atmosphere.
The Roadrunners host the Bulldogs in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at Roadrunner Complex in Lufkin. AC (26-12, 9-3) has won nine of its past ten games, including Saturday's impressive sweep of Northeast Texas.
Making Wednesday's matchup more appealing is the fact that the Roadrunner pitching staff leads the East Zone with a combined 2.32 ERA, while the Bulldogs lead the zone in hitting with a team batting average of .382.
Ryan Bonnot gets the start in the opener for the Roadrunners. The sophomore lefty from The Woodlands has allowed just one earned run over his past two starts and has struck out 38 hitters in just 44 innings of work.
Lufkin native Luis DeJesus gets the nod in the nightcap. DeJesus, who announced his junior college arrival with a no-hitter in his very first start, also has 38 "Ks" in 44 innings.
Live audio/video streaming of the games will be available by logging onto www.angelina.edu and clicking on the Athletics link. Pre-game broadcast will begin at 12:55 p.m.
