LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - (KTRE) - A Lufkin woman who a Lufkin Police officer said he caught offering sex for money was sentenced to nine months in state jail.
Sandra Michelle Smith, 36, pleaded guilty to prostitution Monday in an Angelina County courtroom.
She was scheduled for a plea hearing April 1, 2011, but did not show up and a warrant was issued for her arrest.
Smith was charged with prostitution. The charge is enhanced to a felony because she has been convicted of the crime five previous times.
Prosecutor Dale Summa said because Smith did not show up to the plea hearing, he requested a warrant for her arrest on a bond forfeiture, which District Judge Barry Bryan granted.
According to police, Smith approached a plain-clothed officer in June, near the intersection of Groesbeck Avenue and North Timberland Drive, and offered sex for money. She was arrested without incident.
Summa said Smith's case is the first he has seen where prostitution is enhanced to a felony crime.
