SHELBY COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - (KTRE/SHELBY CO. TODAY) – A pre-dawn fire Wednesday morning destroyed a church that has a long history in Shelby County.
The Shelby County Sheriff's department received a 9-1-1 call shortly after midnight.
The Center Fire Department responded, but there was little they could do save the Center Church of Christ, despite fighting the fire for about 3 hours. A tanker truck from the Tenaha Fire Department was called in to assist.
According to Center Fire Chief, Keith Byndom, upon arrival at the scene, smoke was coming out of the windows and shortly thereafter fire engulfed the whole building. The fire rekindled at 6:51pm and the fire department returned to the church to extinguish the flames again.
Firefighters said it was an older structure and no foul play was suspected, however, a cause of the fire had not been determined. The church was located on U-S 96 North.
