Texas House votes to raise the speed limits on some highways to 85 mph

(AP) - The Texas House has given final approval to a bill that could increase the speed limit to 85 mph on some highways.

The proposal would authorize the Department of Transportation to raise the speed limit on certain areas after engineering and traffic studies have been done. The measure is a provision of a bill that would eliminate funding for an unpopular toll road project.

The Texas Senate is also considering a similar bill. Texas and Utah are the only states that now allow speed limits of 80 miles per hour. Opponents say the higher the speed limit the more accidents there are, more injuries and more deaths.
