LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The Pre-K and Kindergarten programs for Lufkin Independent School District will remain intact for the next school year, beyond that it is anyone's guess.
"We have a commitment from the school board to support these programs for the 2011/2012 school year, regardless of what the state decides," Lynn Torres, Assistant LISD Superintendent of Curriculum, said.
With that commitment in mind, LISD has begun its Kindergarten Roundup for full day Pre-K and Kindergarten. "There are things we will not know about the state and federal budget cuts until August. LISD made a conscious decision to preserve its kindergarten programs, at least for next year. We recognize the value these programs have as building blocks in a child's education. So, regardless of what lawmakers do, we will have Pre-K and Kindergarten at LISD for the 2011/2012 school year," Torres said.
Torres said Pre-K and Kindergarten programs for 2013 are still questionable at this point.
If you have a child to enroll in the kindergarten programs, now is the time to do so. Kindergarten Roundup is Wednesday and Thursday at the Transportation Department on Timberland Drive. The hours are 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. – 12 noon Thursday.
"After tomorrow, parents or guardians will have to go to the individual elementary school campus to register," according to Torres. Torres also said starting Friday the district will begin keeping track of who came in, on what day and at what time, because they anticipate some of the programs will fill quickly and there will be a waiting list for some campuses.
There are 6 qualifications that a student must meet to register, and you will need to provide required documentation to enroll. For details click here www.lufkinisd.org.
